Creative Kids' Bedrooms

Bring the magic of childhood into your kids' bedrooms by creating and designing a space in your new home that your children will love and that will spark their imagination.  Decorating these rooms can be so much fun!  Here are some tips to help you transform it into a space that will truly feel like their own:

  • Invest in traditional furniture with a style that your child won't outgrow.  Purchase accessories like pillows, area rugs, and bedding that can be easily changed as your child gets older and their tastes change.

  • Help your kids stay organized by keeping storage containers and furniture at their height.  Cleanup becomes simple when they can store their toys in places that are easy to access like a cabinet or crate that complements the colors or theme of the room.

  • Just a few accent pieces are used to give this girl's room a teddy bear tea party theme. A colorful area rug can be placed right over carpet for added texture and warmth. As showcased in McCaffrey's Madison Place community.

  • Don't be afraid of color.  Add small pieces that aren't a large investment for a playful look - for example, you can repurpose nightstands by painting them a fun accent color.

  • Pick a theme that your child will love.  Themes like trains, a safari, sports, a teddy bear tea party, etc. give the room a cheerful feel and inspire imagination.

  • Consider adding wainscoting to the walls for added texture.  In addition to the traditional white, you may want to think about brighter colors that complement the childhood theme of the room.

  • This sporty room uses pinstripes to accent neutral walls. A locker room chest at the foot of the bed complements the sports theme along with accessories like area rugs, pillows, and wall art that can be easily switched as children's tastes change. • Colorful rugs are always a great touch to complete the room. Don't be afraid to put an area rug on top of wall-to-wall carpet - layering rugs can add texture, color, and dimension to warm up the room.

  • Add table lamps or mount them on the wall above the bed.  Besides making the room brighter and more cheerful, they provide a soothing mood for a bedtime story when the overhead light is off.

When you're done, your child's room will make them feel happy every time they walk into it, and will make you smile whenever you walk past it. It may even make you want to be a kid again!
