It's one of the most frequently asked questions by our home buyers at their design appointment: “What size rug do I need? Here are three options that may help guide you in your search for the right size rug for your new home:
1. Area Rug: An area rug defines a space within a larger room or in an open floor plan. It can set a living room apart from a dining area, while bringing inviting warmth to a space. When choosing the size of an area rug think about the furniture legs and be consistent, with either all legs on the rug or just the front legs.
For a dining area, be sure to choose a rug large enough for your guests to pull back their chairs. It's best to allow two and a half feet of extra space on all sides of the table, as shown in the photo to the right.
2. Room Size Rug: A room size rug leaves a border of 12 to 18 inches of uncovered floor space. This size of rug can make a compact space feel bigger or add warmth to a larger room. Large area rugs also benefit the acoustics of a home, by helping to minimize echoing in large rooms.
3. Accent Rug: Accent rugs are a great place to incorporate pattern and texture. Think of an accent rug as an accessory – the finishing touch that can make a room feel put together. A plush rug next to the bed or a beautiful, patterned rug under the coffee table are two great ways to use an accent rug. Accent rugs can also be layered on other carpets or room size rugs to add more interest to the room.
We hope these simple tips will help you find the right size rug for any room inside your home.
